AKAAN architecture + design LLC was founded in 2005 by Al and Kannikar Petersen. AKAAN pronounced "ah- kahn," is the Thai word for Building which draws upon Kannikar's Thai heritage. After living, working, and traveling around the world, it became clear that Oregon, which is where Al was born and raised, was the place they wanted to establish their practice. Al and Kannikar had previously worked on large complex projects. Both wanted to establish a practice where they could maintain more personal relationships with clients and other individuals involved. They also wished to follow their ideal of creating architecture that harmonizes with its surrounding environment. Al and Kannikar share a commitment to reducing human impact on the environment and following sustainable design practices. Both are LEED accredited professionals.
